Gold and green hues shimmer in the early morning air as they surround pumpkins and other crops, growing to full size in anticipation of being plucked as fall begins, officially at the end of September.
It’s hard to believe there are areas where the heat is still sweltering, with temperatures soaring and the blinding sun high above, and autumn has already begun. But there are two dates for the start of autumn. Meteorologically, fall begins on the first day of September, while astronomically it starts on the 22nd.
In a flash, we think of this colorful season beginning on the first. In the twilight hours, the air cools even in regions with high temperatures, such as Ohio and Texas. Walking up and stepping onto the porch, you’ll hear the crunching of the leaves falling, dried from the daytime sun.
However, the real colors burst out in full-body flavor around the time leaves and clothing colors change. Burgundy, olive green, orange, and tan hang from the treetops and bushes, waving hello to all that pass by.
Hats, Cashmere scarves, and textured jackets come down from the top of closets with anticipation as the weather grows colder. Reading and research begin on which plants grow best or finding the perfect shower curtain to emphasize the feeling of freedom.

For fall lovers, there’s something about those colors that signals calm vibes in the neighborhoods and makes you pull out comfortable sweaters and raincoats. Even if they are not worn outside, you can bet our fall lovers are wearing them as much as possible inside their home.
The earthly smells of wet foliage, wood, and the fresh green grass rise in the wee hours of each morning. As the sun wakes up, something inside of us wakes up. Even if we don’t get out of bed, the slight breeze rolling through the house from one open window says it all.
Something is exciting about this new season. A twist of heat meets a knowing: fall has never meant going backward. But the complete opposite. A cleanse to release the chaotic intensity of summer is leaving, while a fresh, crisp opportunity awaits. It’s calming and soothing, almost as if it’s saying, “you did it.” Or at the very least, the positivity that you will.
Clearing out garages and closets becomes a priority as the date gets closer. Crockpots are pulled to the front of the cabinet, waiting in anticipation for warm, soulful meals. Holiday ornaments and decorations begin to spread across the lawns in the surrounding neighborhoods, preparing for family fun.

With sweat still on their foreheads, people begin to stack firewood for those cold nights coming, and yet sit and bask in the glorious changes outside. Porch swings and outdoor seating fill up quickly as nighttime approaches. Birds flock to nearby telephone poles and cables hanging high enough to see their favorite show in the day and night fall.
The key to the fall is watching the people. Not high on a wire with the birds, but in every exchange of communication. There is a moment when we join the enthusiastic point of view. The next few months will feel like home, no matter where we are or what we’re doing.
